Performance of Afghanistan cricket team in 2019

Afghanistan began their 2019 when they hosted Ireland in India with all matches being played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uttarakhand. They played a full series comprised of 3 T20Is, 5 ODIs, and alone Test match.

Afghanistan won the T20I series against Ireland by whitewashing them. Then coming to the ODIs, Ireland fought back. The series was ended 2-2 with second ODI being washed out.

They played their first Test match together. Ireland batted first, were at danger as they were 85-9, before a maiden half-century from Tim Murtagh of 54* led Ireland to a better score of 172. Afghanistan gave a great reply by scoring 315 with the fifties from captain Ashgar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and a 98 from Rahmat Shah. Ireland came back strongly by posting 288 in the second innings. But the target of 147 was a cakewalk from Afghanistan as they won the Test match by 7 wickets.

Following the Ireland series, Afghanistan toured Scotland and Ireland for the preparations of the world cup. They played 2 matches each against the respective hosts. They won 1-0 against the Scottish team with the second game being washed out but had a tied series against Ireland 1-1.

They entered the 2019 Cricket World Cup with high expectations to make a couple of upsets. However, the whole tournament was a major disappointment for them. Apart from winning their warm-up match against Pakistan, they did not win a single match. They came close against India and Pakistan in the group stage, where they failed to chase India’s 225 losing by 11 runs and failed to defend 228 where Pakistan chased it by 3 wickets and 2 balls remaining.

After that horrible world cup, Afghanistan toured Bangladesh for a lone Test and a T20 tri-series involving Zimbabwe.

In the Test match, Afghanistan completely dominated the host. They first posted 342 on back of Rahmat Shah’s century and fifties from Ashgar and the new Test captain Rashid before bowling Bangladesh out for 2015, with Rashid taking 5-fer, making him the youngest captain to take 5 wicket haul.

In the second innings, Afganistan posted 260, extending the lead further 397, giving the host target of 398. The captain was enough to bowl Bangladesh all out for 173 as he took 6 fer, making him the youngest Test captain in the history to score a 50 and taking 10-fer in the match.

In the tri-series, Afghanistan began strong by winning the first two matches but then lost the next two matches only to qualify with Bangladesh in the final. However, the final was washed out and they both shared the trophy.

Afghanistan’s last series of 2019 was with the touring West Indies in India, where all matches played at Lucknow. They played a full series of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and a lone Test.

They won the T20I series 2-1. But for the ODIs as it has been throughout the year, they lost 3-0.

As for the lone Test, they lost the match by 9 wickets. They posted 187 as they batted first and West Indies scored 277 in return. West Indies then bowled Afghanistan for 120 and chased their target of 31 down with ease.

Afghanistan had a good Test matches in 2019, winning 2 out of 3. They did even better in T20Is, winning 7 out 10 matches. But they had horrible ODI matches. They won only 4 out of 20 ODIs.
