Did Pakistan missed an opportunity to try out Usman and Zafar in ODIs?

Usman Qadir and Zafar Gohar were part of the Pakistan squad that played the Zimbabwe ODI series. Both bowlers were not given chances in the three-match ODI series as Pakistan won the series 2-1.

The fans and experts raised questions on them not being included in the eleven. Especially in the third ODI, were Pakistan played with four fast and a part-timer. Apart from Mohammad Hasnain and Wahab Riaz, no other bowler was able to pick wickets in that match. This raised questions by many on Pakistan’s lack of genuine spin bowlers in their national side.

Usman Qadir

Usman Qadir, son of late Abdul Qadir, is a right-arm leg-spinning bowler. He has been traveling with the national side for a year. However, he is yet to make his international debut. In his career so far, he averages almost 40 in List A and 26 in Twenty20 in bowling. He represented Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League.

Shadab Khan was injured before the beginning of the Pakistan and Zimbabwe ODI series. Usman had the perfect opportunity to be given a chance. However, Pakistan played mainly with four fast bowlers and an all-rounder in Imad Wasim. Imad was backed by Iftikhar Ahmed as the sixth bowler.

Qadir also played for Perth Scorchers in Big Bash League as well as Australia “A” team when he moved to Australia.

Zafar Gohar

As for Zafar Gohar, the left-arm spinner has represented Pakistan before. He made his ODI debut against England back in 2015, where he played only one match and never played again. In his career so far, he averages 27 in List A and almost 22 in Twenty20 in bowling. In the Pakistan Super League, he has represented Islamabad United and Lahore Qalanders. He was also the part of the 2014 Under19 World Cup squad, where Pakistan finished as runners up.

Being a genuine spinner, Zafar is a bowler who relies more on drift and turns. He has been performing well in the domestic circuit. This could have been a fine opportunity to perform. Apart from his bowling, he can bat a little. He has a century to his name in First-Class cricket.

It was disappointed to see the players not being given proper chance. Especially when it mattered. Pakistan are yet to announced their T20 International squad. If they do, and if both these spinners are included, then they deserve to be given a chance.
