The global health crisis, Coronavirus, has affected the sports scenario across the globe dismissively. Cricket is one of the major sports that has been under the influence of the Coronavirus, unfortunately.
Two upcoming mega cricketing events; Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC T20 World Cup 2020 will probably be having an apathetic obstruction in their schedules.
ICC T20 World Cup 2020 was all set to be organized by 18th October but the recent reports have disclosed that IPL will move ahead to a new window later this year. The owners of the franchises and cricket authorities of India want the cash-rich league to take place before the initiations of the World Cup so it can serve as a practicing platform for their players.
BCCI also does not want to go with the truncated version of the league and both the tournaments cannot take place within 3-4 months. Suppose if after the situation gets better by September and the authorities schedule IPL by October, when will ICC T20 World Cup take place?
Recently, the owners of IPL franchises have said that IPL will take place by any means and we can reschedule it behind the closed doors as well but a mega-event like World Cup cannot be played without spectators hence, it shall be shifted to another new possible window other than October.
“It is also a dicey situation for the ICC management to organize big events when major tennis, football, and athletic events aren’t happening this year. So our understanding is simple. If at all cricket happens in autumn, it is got to be IPL for sure,” a team official said.
“So, IPL can happen without spectators and with the entire world getting hooked to TV once again and IPL viewing over 90 percent on TV, chances of hosting IPL are really bright. One thing is for sure, it is tough for World T20 to sustain without fans inside the stadium,” another official added.
It is to be noted that according to many reliable reports the cricketing authorities are looking for possible scheduling of IPL in 2020, not later than it which can cause the World Cup to be scheduled later.
