India announced squad for Cricket World Cup 2019

India has announced their squad for Cricket World Cup 2019, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik included in Virat Kohli-led squad.

The No.2 side on the ICC ODI Team Rankings are fairly settled, and go into the tournament in England and Wales, which starts on 30 May, as one of the favourites.

India’s batting has been solid in recent times. Virat Kohli tops the batting rankings, with Rohit Sharma behind him and Shikhar Dhawan.

Four extra fast bowlers will travel with the team. They will serve the dual purpose of bowling in the nets and also stay as standby should there be an injury. The bowlers haven’t yet been named

Rishab Pant does not make the cut. Vijay Shankar has been slotted in that position which called for a batsman who could strike hard. He could also bowl a bit if conditions were ideal. Jadeja is chosen for the second half of the tournament when pitches would be drier.

Rishabh Pant is India’s Test wicketkeeper, but the chairman of selectors has just said that his wicketkeeping has cost him a spot as the reserve wicketkeeper to Dinesh Karthik. Strange situation!

Kedar Jadav is also chosen as batsman who could bowl a bit, if needed. Thus it looks like selectors have gone for extra players who could chip in usefully in their non-core areas. So Vijay Shankar and Kedar are batsmen who can bowl and Jadeja is a bowler who can bat.

According to MSK Prasad Vijay Shankar has been slotted into the No 4 slot in the Indian team.

“We’ve covered all the bases, and this is one of the most balanced sides we have produced. We had discussed Khaleel and Saini, and they will be around. We’ve been planning. Let me frankly tell that in the last month or so, there were a couple of places which cropped up. We do have reserves,” says chief selector MSK Prasad in the press conference.

Why Karthik?

MSK Prasad, chief of selectors, says that Dinesh Karthik’s wicketkeeping has shunted Rishabh Pant. “Wicketkeeping also matters. That is the reason why we went with Dinesh Karthik otherwise Rishabh Pant was also there.”

He also says Karthik is just a back-up for Dhoni, and not an automatic starter in the XI

Why no Rayudu?

“After the Champions Trophy we have tried quite a few middle-order batsmen, which also included Karthik, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey. We did give a few more chances to Rayudu but Vijay Shankar gives three dimesnions. He can bat, if the conditions are overcast he can bowl, plus he is a fielder. We are looking at Vijay Shankar as a No. 4. Now we have plenty of options for that slot.”

Why no fourth seamer?

Prasad says he has two seam-bowling allrounders. Then there is spin back-up in Kedar Jadhav. That is why they stuck with just the three specialist quicks

What role does KL Rahul have?

“To begin with, he will only be a reserve opener, but if the team management needs, he can bat in the middle order too.” – MSK Prasad
