Squad Announcement

Sri Lanka dropped Chandimal as they announced 15-member squad for World Cup 2019

A day after naming Dimuth Karunaratne as the captain for the 2019 World Cup, Sri Lanka have announced their preliminary squad for the mega event, beginning in England on May 30.

On Wednesday, Veteran pacer Lasith Malinga was sacked as ODI skipper with Sri Lanka Cricket on Wednesday naming Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne to lead the country at the 50-over World cup in England, beginning on May 30.

“Karunaratne’s appointment was ratified by the Minister of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports Honorable Harin Fernando,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a release.

Now Sri Lankan cricket board has left-out Dinesh Chandiman and Upul Tharanga from their preliminary squad for Cricket World Cup.

Milinda Siriwardana, Jeffrey Vandersay and Jeevan Mendis made remarkable comebacks as Sri Lanka announced their 15-strong squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 on Thursday, 18 April.

However, many of the regulars, including Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dinesh Chandimal, Upul Tharanga and Akila Dananjaya, were excluded from the squad altogether, with Oshada Fernando, Angelo Perera, Kasun Rajitha, and Wanindu Hasaranga placed on standby.

Despite being deposed of captaincy duties, Lasith Malinga, who will probably feature in his fourth and last World Cup, will headline the bowling attack which also includes Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep.

Springing another surprise, the selectors have opted for leg-break bowler Jeffrey Vandersay ahead of mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya.

Siriwardana and Vandersay last played one-day internationals in October 2017, while Jeevan Mendis’ previous appearance in the format came in the 2015 World Cup match against Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka will fine-tune preparations for the World Cup with two One Day Internationals against Scotland, on May 18 and 21 and will follow it up with warm-up fixtures against South Africa and Australia. The 1996 champions begin their title challenge against New Zealand at the Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on June 1.
