Champions League Final – Match Report

Real Madrid defend their title by winning the trophy for the twelfth time. This battle was expected to be the interesting but it ended up as one sided​ battle. Juventus has shown really good approach in the first half but poor game has shown by Juventus in the second half. This was accepted by their manager, he said; “In the first half we played beautifully. In the second half, Real Madrid pressed the accelerator and we were not able to respond.” This was the turning point of the game.

Real Madrid started the battle with a lead over Juventus when Cristiano – the record breaker scored a goal. But soon after the first goal, Mandzukic with a sesational and stunning goal level the lead for Juventus. Later on, Cristiano tried again through his acrobatic to restore the lead but couldn’t make it. Half time ended up with a draw. The game has really changed in the second half. As Juventus manager said; “After conceding the 2nd goal we should have stayed in the game. We created some chances but we were not able to take them.” Casemiro and Ronaldo with second goal of the game, increased the lead by 3-1. In last minute, before the extra time Asensio scored a goal and thus sealed the victory for the team. Toni Kroos responded to their victory by saying that; “I didn’t think it was possible to defend this title, it’s difficult to win it once. To win it three times in four years means a lot.”

Buffon was upset and in tears at the end of the game. He accepted the fact that they have shown poor performance in the second half. “Real Madrid deserved to win in the second half. They showed their class and the attitude needed to play in this kind of game.”

This final has broken​ many records and the ultimate credit goes to Cristiano – the Ronaldo. With the first goal of the game, Cristiano has become the first player to score in three Champions League finals. Whereas, he made his own record of most number of goals more better by scoring two goals. He was closed to the hat-trick but unfortunately he couldn’t score. Cristiano is the top scorer for the fifth straight years from 2013 to 2017 with 12 goals this season. Messi is second top scorer with 11 goals. Now, he has joined Iniesta and Seedorf in Champions League history to have appeared in four final wins. Along with the individual records, team has made some records too. With the initial goal of the game, Real Madrid have become the first team to cross 500 goal milestone in Champions League competitions. Barcelona is second with 459 goals. They also become the first team to retain the UEFA Champions League. Zidane has become the second coach to win the European Cup in his first two seasons.

From Juventus, It was the 100 Champions League game for their legend Dani Alves. Mandzukic with his outstanding goal has become the third player to score in either a European Cup or Champions League final for two different teams. Unfortunately, Juventus have lost seven finals now. They were in good position but due to their bad performance in second half, match has gone from their hands.
