It was Ireland’s big day as they played at the home of cricket, Lords for the first time. Ireland won the toss and elected to field first seeing the conditions being more beneficial for the bowlers.
” More a reflection of what we’ve got today, overhead conditions and cloud cover early on. We’ve just got step over the white line and go through our processes, but it’s a big day. The lads are fired up and raring to go.” said the Irish captain, Porterfield.
Eoin Morgan also said after losing the toss that he would have chosen to field first if he had won the toss.
Ireland were off to a good start as they took two early wickets, restricting England. But later Eoin Morgan and Joe Root played a partnership of 140 runs which gave England a good stand. Joe Root was dismissed for 73 off 73 balls while Eoin Morgan was dismissed after scoring 76 off 79 balls. Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid later played some great shots in the last 10 overs, getting England to a total of 328 for the loss of 6 wickets. Jonny Bairstow played a tremendous inning of 72 off 44 deliveries.
Peter Chase took 2 wickets for 69 and James McCarthy took 2 wickets for 52 runs. Dockrell and Tim Murtagh took 1 wicket each.
Ireland required 329 runs to win their historic match at the Lords. Ireland were off to a great start until Paul Stirling got dismissed on 48 off 42 balls, hitting 8 fours and 1 six. Ed Joyce could not stay longer on the crease either and got out 16 off 43 deliveries. The Irish captain, Porterfield later put in a fight but the middle order could not go with him in the chase. Porterfield was later dismissed at 82 runs off 83 deliveries, playing a captain’s knock.
Ireland was later restricted to 243 after 46.1 overs.
Joe Root and Plunkett took 3 wickets each. Mark Wood took 2 wickets while Adil Rashid and Jake Ball took 1 wicket each.
“I thought we were much improved today. We put a lot of things right. We kept going even through that big partnership. With the bat, just a couple of wickets behind the game. Lot of credit McCarthy for coming in for a big game. We did a lot of hard work, not making easy for anyone fo start, but credit to Bairstow and Rashid at the end. But lads put their hand up. After Friday it would have been easy to hide away, but we took a step forward. Even when we were six down.” Said the Irish Captain Willian Porterfield.
“Today presented different challenges, cloud cover this morning and the openers did really well” said Eoin Morgan, the England Captain.
“The quality of cricket coming up is extremely good and that’s what we want. Great to see Woody back, getting more overs under his belt.” added Eoin Morgan.
England also win the Royal London One Day series after the 2nd victory at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
