LAHORE: The selection committee is considering to include middle-order batsman Fawad Alam in the national squad against Australia A for the forthcoming four-match ODI series, said sources.
According to sources, Fawad will be included in Pakistan A team which will play the 4-match ODI series against Australia at UAE starting from September 29.
The middle-order batsman played his last ODI match against Bangladesh in 2015.
Back in 2015, he showed his steel in a tour game against England XI, and his ODI figures fare even better. With an average of 40.25, players with numbers much worse than him are mainstays in the Pakistan set-up. Admittedly, his strike rate is on the lower side at 74.
Earlier in 2018 when Fawad Alam was not selected for series against Ireland and England, The middle order batsman failed to control over his emotions and burst into tears when he was informed that he was not selected. Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was with Alam at that time, too shed tears and consoled the dejected player.
“Fawad Alam is an outstanding player but in the last three years there are others at the top of the list,” Inzamam said in an interview to ESPNcricinfo.
Fawad is a good player and we obviously can’t ignore his career average; that is why he was brought into the camp. During my tenure, I have given 12 to 14 players an opportunity and none of them have disappointed us. If you look back in the past three seasons, there are players who have scored more runs than Fawad Alam.
Fawad has scored 10,744 runs on an impressive 55.09 average in the domestic circuit. The four-match series will commence from September 29 in the United Arab Emirates.
Senior test player Asad Shafiq is a strong contender to lead the national side.
Sami Aslam, Asad Ali, Muhammad Asghar, Bilal Asif, Rahat Ali, Shan Masood, Mir Hamza, Muhammad Rizwan and Hussain Talat are expected to be included in the final squad, said sources.
