PSL is a league that holds immense importance for the people belonging to Pakistan. Not only the league itself but the teams also have vast numbers of fan followings. Let’s go through all the imperative aspects of Quetta Gladiators. It is owned by Nadeem Omer. Sarfraz Ahmed is the current captain. Sir Vivian Richards is doing the duty of a mentor and Moin khan is the head-coach. The team’s home ground is Bugti stadium and Maya Ali, Kaleem Ullah are the brand ambassadors. The team is known by the nick-names of ‘Shan e Pakistan and purple force’. Gladiators are also a one time winner of this prestigious tournament. It’s time to rewind to 2016 and relive their performances in all seasons.
They began this season by winning against Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and Peshawar Zalmi. Lahore qalandars defeated them but they quickly covered that up by beating Islamabad united quite comfortably. This was also their ticket to become the table-toppers. They later overcame the kings once again and reached the playoffs. Overall they finished second winning 6 out of 8 matches. Quetta crushed Peshawar in the playoff thriller and ended up being in the final. Unfortunately, they were deficient and lost the match to Islamabad united and their chance to become victorious
Quetta started the season by defeating qalandars and kings. They then lost the momentum as the defending champions beat them. Then Peshawar and Quetta had to share points due to the match being abandoned. Later they started their winning streak by once again beating qalandars and kings. This winning streak was broken as both Islamabad and Peshawar defeated them respectively. Gladiators then came stronger in the playoffs and in conquered a thriller by defeating the Zalmis by one run. They became the first time to qualify for the finals but once again like last year fell short. The same team that they won against in the playoffs came on top and grabbed the trophy.
Quetta had a shocking opening to season 3 as their winning streak against Karachi got broken. Beating Lahore wasn’t a difficult task for them and they did that quite satisfyingly as they registered a 9 wicket win against them. This was also their biggest win against any team. They also didn’t lose their form against the united and defeated them too. What came next was their match against the rivals Peshawar and they couldn’t come first in that. They also lost against the sultans. But as the matches shifted back to Dubai, their form also came back and they were successful in beating Multan. This winning streak was continued against both Karachi and Peshawar. However, they weren’t able to reach the final.
They finished this season in the second position. They defeated the Zalmis in the qualifier to reach the final. The teams met again and Quetta was finally able to break the jinx and finish season 4 as the winner of the Pakistan Super league. A happy year for them indeed.
The defending champions started the season on a high note by beating Islamabad united but the charm only lasted for a while as they lost the next match against Zalmi. They didn’t lose hope and were able to defeat Karachi and united respectively. After that, the dark phase came on Quetta and they lost 4 matches continuously. One match was also abandoned due to rain. They did beat kings in the next game, and came neck to neck with Peshawar but fell inadequate to qualify for the playoffs due to a lesser run rate. This was the first time that they weren’t in the playoffs. Wasn’t a very cheerful year for them as they finished fifth on the points table.
Wish them the very best of luck for season six.
