Whenever we have the men seen in green dominating in any ICC tournament, strangely the venue of the tournament always turns out to be the United Kingdom where the Green Team has been very dominant since the 90’s when it comes to participating in ICC tournaments.
Starting from 1999 World Cup which was held in England, Wasim Akram led Pakistan to perform brilliantly well throughout the tournament. The players performed consistently which made the Green Team a very dominant side but unfortunately, Pakistan fell one step short of lifiting the World Cup after losing the final against Australia but qualifying for the finals was also a big achievement.
Then came the 2004 Champions Trophy event once again staged in The UK and it was the perfect opportunity for Pakistan to claim their first ever Champions Trophy title as the squad that participated looked quite strong and did fairly well in the group stages however couldn’t stand tall in the knockout stages which made the Pakistani fans wait a little longer to get hold of their maiden Champions Trophy title.
5 years later, Pakistani Team travelled to England once again to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2009 in which The Green Team played fearlessly and this time did not lose in the semi’s or Finals, Instead they brought the World Cup back home with the courtesy some outstanding performances from players like Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi and under the leadership of Younis Khan. Pakistan were able to make history by winning their first T20 World Cup comprehensively and also made sure this victory is cherished for a long period of time.
The most recent tournament that was once again hosted by the founding nation of Cricket, The Champions Trophy 2017 in which Pakistan stepped into as underdogs and were told they do not stand a chance of winning the event. But things changed as a group of young Cricketers in the shape of Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Ali, Shadab Khan and a brave Leader like Sarfaraz Ahmed along with a couple of seniors in the team demolished top teams like India, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka and then went on to lift their first ever Champions Trophy. Pakistani’s are still not over this memorable Tournament win as Pakistan won a Major ICC event after Quite a long time.
The next big event, that will be held in the UK will be the ICC World Cup 2019. A lot can be expected from Pakistan due to their good successful record in the country. Hopefully the Men in Green will do well and will not disappoint their fans and try to win their second World Cup, though it is going to be tough but Pakistan are known as the unpredictables, they have the ability to outplay any team and win big matches.
