There’s no doubt about the talent in Pakistan when it comes to cricket. The introduction of Pakistan Super League turned out to be a turning point for the modern Pakistani team. Right when it was impossible to see the future of Pakistani cricket team, the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Super League showed how much potential Pakistan holds when it comes to talent. It also gave opportunities to some players to make a comeback in the squad. Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif and Mohammad Sami were given a chance in the Pakistani side after an impressive first season of Pakistan Super League. The same way, the second edition of the league helped Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad to get a second chance in the squad.
The first edition of Pakistan Super League gave a platform to many young players, for example, Hassan Ali, who is a superstar now. The same way the second edition of the Pakistan Super League introduced us to the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Rumman Raees and
more. The thing is, Pakistan Super League applied what PCB did not even try to apply back then. They did
the raw talent to play Pakistan Super League, but even the ”raw talent” was selected on merit. And when there’s merit, there’s competition. Thanks to the introduction of Pakistan Super League, which influenced PCB to do the selection on the basis of merit.
In the past one year, Pakistan became from zeroes to heroes and it was a rollercoaster ride for the Pakistani fans. From losing 4-1 in the One-day International series in England last year to winning Champions Trophy in England. There’s no doubt about the current Pakistani squad’s immense talent among the youngsters and the side would always put their full efforts. But there’s still a lot to change or develop in the current squad. Yes, it’s impossible to make changes in the current squad but that does not mean Pakistan should not test new lads. If Pakistan wants it to be the beginning of something new or a new era, now is the opportunity to test the cricketing skills properly. There’s probably no need to make changes but if Pakistan wants to see next 10 years as solid 10 years, then they at least have to test.
Pakistan has been looking for an all-rounder like Abdul Razzaq ever since. Now is the best opportunity to introduce a fast bowling all-rounder. There’s not even a debate about it, Amir Yamin has been in the headlines in the domestic circuit for over 2 years now. Apart from bowling, he is very consistent when it comes to hitting. He likes picking up the ball while batting and is old enough and young enough to be a part of the Pakistani side in upcoming years. Pakistan needs an Amir Yamin. They need a hitter, they need a fast bowling all-rounder. Alongside him, Fahim Ashraf has also been impressive. The decision to select him was criticized a lot but Fahim did well to put the criticism down. Fahim Ashraf is an exciting prospect for Pakistan and deserves more chances.
Hassan Mohsin is another gem. He’s 19 years-old and has played for Pakistan in the under-19 team. It might be too early to introduce him to the Pakistani side since he lacks First Class experience but if he’s groomed, he can be a great all-rounder for Pakistan with in next 3 to 4 years. He is very consistent with the bat and can bowl as well. The boy knows how to grab a chance to shine up with the bat and PCB should consider him as an asset who can help in the future.
Sharjeel Khan was a great choice for the Pakistani side but the spot-fixing case has put shadows over any potential comeback since the case doesn’t seem to be solved early. It is a big loss for Pakistan, Sharjeel could do everything Pakistan wanted. The current opening pair of Pakistan has put in some decent performances. Azhar always has been consistent when it comes to batting. The introduction of Fakhar Zaman turned out to a good addition to the Pakistani side. Fakhar Zaman made it to the Pakistan Super League after impressive performances in the Qaid-e-Azam Trophy. His great performance in the Champions Trophy proved his potential. There are great years ahead of him if he continues his form. Fakhar Zaman is a glimmer of hope for the modern cricket in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s main focus should be in all 3 formats. Not just in One-day Internationals. With the departure of Misbah and Younis, Pakistan needs the new names. Consistent players. If Pakistan tries every possible shot from here, there’s no doubt they’ll produce a better and a competitive squad for World Cup 2019.
There are great future players in Pakistan. Sahibzada Farhaan is one of them. He seems to be mature and plays solid strokes. He had a great form in the recent Pakistan Cup 2017. He needs to be in the next edition of Pakistan Super League and if he does perform and plays the cricket he is known to play, he can be a great pick from the Pakistani cricket team. Pakistan has been looking for aggressive batsmen for a long time now and they finally have the short-list of them. It’s just up to them to perform and make it to the Pakistani side. There is immense talent when it comes to the batting and it’s up to the players to perform and PCB to shine and groom their talent. Imam-Ul-Haq, Saif Badar, Sahibzada Farhan and few more must be a top priority to groom. At least when of them have to fill the spot of Ahmed Shehzad in the squad with in a year or two. Babar Azam is a star in making who is very dedicated towards the game. He can become a much better player he is right now by being consistent. Pakistan also needs to find a replacement of Hafeez and Shoaib Malik once they retire. The selectors should make up a list now and observe them until the final moment.
The bowling department really does not need much change. Amir and Hassan are an important part of the squad. Junaid and Rumman will have to fight for the spot in the lineup if Sarfaraz has the plan for 3 seamers and 2 spinners in upcoming future. But if team management and the captain try out the combination of 4 seamers then it would be a perfect combination of Amir, Hassan,
and Junaid. Along with that, introducing new fast bowlers wouldn’t be an issue at all.
Sameen Gul and Usman Shinwari are the ones to watch in upcoming years. In tests, we need to make a place for Mohammed Asghar. He has been on hold for long enough now. He is talented and has a potential to be a top bowler in upcoming years, especially in the test format. The combination of a leggie and an off spinner can bag some more wickets for Pakistan than having two leggies. If Asghar performs up to his potential, who knows he might be the best off-spinner Pakistan ever produced.
There are countless names who can be considered as the future of Pakistan cricket. Pakistan needs to make a combination of good chemistry between the players. This might be a chance for Pakistan to be one of the great teams in the world again. They should be trying new names, grooming talent and provide opportunities to the players who couldn’t play up to expectations in their first chances. Pakistan can be a tough team to play if they keep on experimenting and rotate the squad to sort things up. There’s a solid future for Pakistan if opportunities are provided. They need to be ready for the future. They have a fighting spirit, they just need more fighters in the upcoming future. They have found a great leader in the shape of Sarfaraz who has given people the positive vibes since day one as the captain. The team knows there’s no other option than winning and to fight. There’s been a rough patch and they fought through it very hard. Who knows Pakistan might be a tough contender for the upcoming international tournaments if they make players deliver more of their talent. They need to set much higher goals and aim high. Winning Champions Trophy surely has increased the morale of the players which is what gives a glimpse of much better days ahead.
